Amber Alerts

The AMBER Alert system was created in the United States in 1996 following a tragic incident that involved the kidnapping and murder of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman.
AMBER Alert is a warning system that quickly alerts the public of a missing or abducted child under 18 years who is in imminent danger. Specific criteria must be met before the Alert will be activated. When it is determined that an AMBER Alert is required, information about the victim or missing child will be displayed on electronic highway signs, radio, television and cable TV stations. The public should immediately call 9-1-1 or their local police force if they can provide the police with information relating to the AMBER Alert.
Police believe the first two to five hours of an abduction are the most crucial, and will now have thousands of sets of eyes trying to assist them in saving a child’s life and apprehending their abductor. The recent involvement of the Ontario Association of Broadcasters fosters a greater sense of safety and security for the well being of our children. The O.A.B. will be a tremendous lifeline in search efforts, and we will take advantage to the fullest extent of their ability and readiness to provide the eyes on our roadways and in our communities when one of our children is abducted.
When an AMBER Alert is issued it will be posted to all OnMyBlock.ca neighourhood websites. This service is provided courtesy of Code Amber (www.codeamber.org). Code Amber was founded in August 2002 in response to what seems like an epidemic of child abductions across North America and the UK. As of January 2004 the Code Amber Ticker is on over 100,000 web sites and desktops.
